Fading Glory

This isn't a new painting but it's a very special one to me. Appropriate for the coming of autumn, and especially for my grandmother Mary Smithers' anniversary, "Fading Glory" shows the power and majesty of the transition from a magnificent flower to become a seed pod, ready to spread life anew. I painted the Sunflower series through its phases of growth, blooming and demise, and felt it had a deep connection with the ups and downs of what was happening in my own life. The technique is wet-in-wet on Arches paper. The highlights around the seed head were lifted out when wet (and a little more after it dried). I was careful to use only those paints which would not stain the paper. A limited edition giclee print is available of this painting (size 21" x 14") on my website www.katebedell.com.
